Lip Cosmetic Tattooing

Transform your lips by restoring symmetry and volume, while also creating the perfect pout!

As we age, we lose definition in our lips, especially through what is known as the vermillion border. At Nelson Brows and Beauty, we can reapply that definition, creating lips that are soft, more defined and have a gorgeous colour.

This is a form of semi permanent makeup using a cosmetic tattoo machine. It brings back the border, improving the shape of your lips, giving the illusion of fullness. You have the option of enhancing your natural lip colour or choosing a brighter lipstick look.

 Pre-Procedure Instructions

To ensure the best results, please follow these instructions before treatment

  • Gently exfoliate your lips with honey & sugar or coconut oil & sugar in the 3 days prior to your treatment. This helps to remove any dead skin cells.

  • Do not wear any lip makeup to the procedure.

  • Avoid consuming caffeine on the day of your procedure and alcohol in the 48 hours prior to your procedure.

  • Discontinue any medication, painkillers or supplements that may thin your blood - at least 7 days before your procedure. Please talk to your physician before stopping any medication that you have been prescribed.

Plan the day of your appointment. It is best to avoid strenuous activity in the few days after your appointment, along with anything that may irritate your tattoo. This means that tasks like cleaning and gardening are best done before or a few days after your procedure. Many people choose to avoid significant social events immediately after the procedure, as the lips can initially be swollen and could be slightly uncomfortable.

Lips are particularly sensitive to infection, so there are a few additional areas to be aware of:

If you are prone to cold sores, you will need to get an antiviral prescription from your doctor. The medication should be taken 5-7 days before the procedure and a couple of days after. This is also true if you have had shingles, chicken pox or a fever blister in the past.

Using medication is critical, as the treatment can aggravate the skin and cause cold sores to develop,

  • People who often get cold sores may need an antiviral prescription from their physician. They will be able to inform you about the timing between your prescription and your procedure.

  • A sinus infection increases the risk of lip infection. Sinus infections are not always obvious, so anyone who gets frequent sinus infections needs to be aware of the additional risk.

  • Antacid drugs, antibiotic therapy,  steroid medications and smoking can contribute to a higher candida count, which may increase your risk of lip infection.

  • If you have had (or are planning to have) any lip surgery, consult your physician about the amount of time to wait before having a permanent makeup procedure on your lips.

Post Procedure Instructions

To ensure the best results, please follow these instructions after treatment

AfterCare Steps

  • Keep the lips clean and moist, using a clean and cool wet washcloth to wipe your lips when needed.

  • Apply vaseline to your lips as often as needed to keep them moist. Do this with a cotton bud only, Do not use your fingers.

Avoid the following:

  • Scrubbing or rubbing the treated area or touching it with your fingers.

  • Peeling or picking at the crust. Doing so can lead to delayed healing, pigment loss or scarring.

  • Strenuous activity for the 2 days following your procedure.

  • Avoid using any makeup or gloss on the area for a week after the procedure. When you do use makeup or gloss, try to use a new product as this reduces the risk of any secondary infection.

  • Exposing your lips to intense environments, such as chlorinated pools, tanning beds and hot tubs for 2 weeks following your procedure. While you can have a shower, try to avoid getting forceful water on your face. Apply an extra layer of vaseline before taking a shower.

To get the most out of your permanent cosmetics:

  • Use a good sunscreen. Sun exposure tends to fade your cosmetics.

  • Avoid using exfoliating and acidic products around the area, as they can lighten your colour over time. Examples include hyaluronic acid and Retin-A.

What You Can Expect

  • The initial colour will be stronger and more vibrant than your final result. The colour will soften and fade up to 50% as the skin heals.

  • You may experience some initial swelling, along with redness, itchiness and/or tenderness. These symptoms will decrease over time.

  • You might experience some pigment dropping out or flaking off. This can sometimes occur and will be filled in during your touch up visit.

Cosmetic tattoos are considered permanent because the pigment molecules remain in your skin. However, the colour is not permanent and will naturally fade over time. Scheduling a colour boost every few years is recommended for refreshing your colour. A colour boost also gives you the chance to change the specific shade that of your lips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’ve had Previous Cosmetic Tattooing Before?

Previous cosmetic tattooing from another artist can be a challenge to go over due to factors such as scarring, shape and colour. We require pictures to be sent to info@nelsonbrowandbeauty.com before booking in the procedure or alternatively, you can make a quick free consultation to discuss your options.

Is the touch up session necessary?

Yes. A touch up session is always required after a cosmetic tattoo procedure. The session provides an opportunity to refine the tattoo and to ensure that it matches the desired colour and shape. The process is essential because there are differences in the ways that people respond to the pigment.

Can I have the touch up session earlier?

No, you need to wait at least 4 weeks after your procedure for your touch up appointment (ideally 6 weeks). This time allows your skin to heal and respond fully to the tattoo. An earlier touch up session risks producing suboptimal results and could cause scarring.

How long does the makeup last?

Cosmetic tattoo inks are designed to fade over time. Their fading can be influenced by a variety of factors, including sun exposure, the skincare products used and individual differences in the skin.

The colour of your tattoo will also influence fading. Softer colours tend to fade faster, while darker colours can last longer. As a general guideline, lip colour can last anywhere from 18 months to 5 years.

What affects colour loss?

Some of the most significant areas that can influence colour loss are:

  • The pigment. As a general rule, lighter and more subtle colours tend to fade the fastest.

  • Sun exposure. Keeping your lips out of direct sunlight and wearing sunscreen can help reduce any potential colour loss.

  • Strong skincare ingredients. Skincare with ingredients like Retinol A, salicylic acid and glycolic acid can decrease the colour in your lips over time.

  • Chlorine. Chlorine from swimming pools is also notable. Regular swimmers are likely to find that their colour decreases faster.

  • Medications. Some medications may increase the rate of colour loss.

  • Individual differences. The way a person’s skin responds to a permanent tattoo is not entirely predictable, as there are many differences between people. As a result, some people may lose colour faster than others, even when all other factors are the same.

Following the pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions precisely can promote colour retention and the outcomes that you’re looking for.

Does it hurt?

Individual experiences vary, as people have different levels of sensitivity. Some clients report a little discomfort during the procedure, while others have no problems at all. The tattooed area can also be sensitive after the procedure, which will decrease over time.

Topical anaesthetics are used to minimize any pain or discomfort. You’re likely to find that any pain is less than you expect.

What can I expect after the procedure?

Your lips will also look a little larger than normal initially, due to minor swelling. The lip pigment will also be darker than normal initially. The colour and swelling will naturally decrease over the first 4 days after your procedure.

You may also feel tenderness and dryness on your lips immediately after the procedure. This often feels similar to a sunburn.

The colour on your lips may appear spotty during the healing process. This is normal and is not something to be concerned about.

Do I still need to wear lipstick? Can I wear other colours on top?

This entirely depends on the look that you are trying to achieve. Many people focus on a natural colour, so that they can use lipstick to change the shade when needed. Your desired look will be discussed during your consultation, along with the colour that you are looking for.

Who can have cosmetic tattooing?

You need to be at least 18 years of age. Cosmetic tattooing is also unsuitable for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. Some medical conditions or medications may also prevent a person from being able to have a cosmetic tattoo. This area can be discussed in more detail on a case-by-case basis.

What forms of payment to you accept?

We have EFTPOS on site. We also accept payment in cash, via bank deposit and through payment plan. You can find more information on our payment details page.
