Frequently Asked Questions
What if I’ve had Previous Cosmetic Tattooing Before?
Previous cosmetic tattooing from another artist can be a challenge to go over due to factors such as scarring, shape and colour. We require pictures to be sent to info@nelsonbrowandbeauty.com before booking in the procedure or alternatively, you can make a quick free consultation to discuss your options.
Is the touch up session necessary?
Yes. A touch up session is always required after a cosmetic tattoo procedure. The session provides an opportunity to refine the tattoo and to ensure that it matches the desired colour and shape. The process is essential because there are differences in the ways that people respond to the pigment.
Can I have the touch up session earlier?
No, you need to wait at least 4 weeks after your procedure for your touch up appointment (ideally 6 weeks). This time allows your skin to heal and respond fully to the tattoo. An earlier touch up session risks producing suboptimal results and could cause scarring.
How long does the makeup last?
Cosmetic tattoo inks are designed to fade over time. Their fading can be influenced by a variety of factors, including sun exposure, the skincare products used and individual differences in the skin.
The colour of your tattoo will also influence fading. Softer colours tend to fade faster, while darker colours can last longer. As a general guideline, lip colour can last anywhere from 18 months to 5 years.
What affects colour loss?
Some of the most significant areas that can influence colour loss are:
The pigment. As a general rule, lighter and more subtle colours tend to fade the fastest.
Sun exposure. Keeping your lips out of direct sunlight and wearing sunscreen can help reduce any potential colour loss.
Strong skincare ingredients. Skincare with ingredients like Retinol A, salicylic acid and glycolic acid can decrease the colour in your lips over time.
Chlorine. Chlorine from swimming pools is also notable. Regular swimmers are likely to find that their colour decreases faster.
Medications. Some medications may increase the rate of colour loss.
Individual differences. The way a person’s skin responds to a permanent tattoo is not entirely predictable, as there are many differences between people. As a result, some people may lose colour faster than others, even when all other factors are the same.
Following the pre-procedure and post-procedure instructions precisely can promote colour retention and the outcomes that you’re looking for.
Does it hurt?
Individual experiences vary, as people have different levels of sensitivity. Some clients report a little discomfort during the procedure, while others have no problems at all. The tattooed area can also be sensitive after the procedure, which will decrease over time.
Topical anaesthetics are used to minimize any pain or discomfort. You’re likely to find that any pain is less than you expect.
What can I expect after the procedure?
Your lips will also look a little larger than normal initially, due to minor swelling. The lip pigment will also be darker than normal initially. The colour and swelling will naturally decrease over the first 4 days after your procedure.
You may also feel tenderness and dryness on your lips immediately after the procedure. This often feels similar to a sunburn.
The colour on your lips may appear spotty during the healing process. This is normal and is not something to be concerned about.
Do I still need to wear lipstick? Can I wear other colours on top?
This entirely depends on the look that you are trying to achieve. Many people focus on a natural colour, so that they can use lipstick to change the shade when needed. Your desired look will be discussed during your consultation, along with the colour that you are looking for.
Who can have cosmetic tattooing?
You need to be at least 18 years of age. Cosmetic tattooing is also unsuitable for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. Some medical conditions or medications may also prevent a person from being able to have a cosmetic tattoo. This area can be discussed in more detail on a case-by-case basis.
